Late Christmas surge fails to lift Germany's year

A late spending frenzy was not enough to end a challenging year on a positive note for German booksellers. While sales during Christmas week were up 16% year-on-year, December as a whole was down 2.6%, according to figures provided by trade paper Buchreport in conjunction with Media Control.

Cumulative figures for the 12 months were also down, but only fractionally: minus 1.6% compared to minus 1.5% a year earlier.
