MacLehose Press has bought a novel by Lars Mytting, author behind "surprise Christmas gift book" Norwegian Wood.
MacLehose Press acquired world English language rights to At Swim with Those Who Drown by Mytting from Berlin-based agent Gudrun Hebel.
A major Norwegian bestseller, and winner of the Norwegian Bookseller Award 2015, the novel has now been sold to nine other territories and optioned for film by Morten Tyldum ("The Imitation Game“ (2014)).
MacLehose Press recently published Mytting’s practical wood-lore bible Norwegian Wood: Chopping, Stacking and Drying Wood the Scandinavian Way, currently at the centre of Quercus' Twitter campaign #showusyourstack and on its fourth UK printing.
At Swim is set between Norway, France at the time of the Battle of the Somme, and the Shetlands, and is the story of a young man on a quest to solve the mystery of his parents‘ death 20 years earlier.
Katharina Bielenberg, associate publisher at MacLehose Press, said: "We are very pleased to be following Norwegian Wood with a work of fiction, and the prospect of a film makes it all the more exciting. At Swim is dazzlingly constructed; dramatic events take place across a widescreen narrative, with beautifully crafted characters. The novel deals with big themes, grief, loss and love – and, of course, the love of wood."
