Laird wins Betty Trask Award for début novel

<p>Twenty authors won a total of almost &#163;70,000 at the Society of Author's Awards this week. Nick Laird won the &#163;10,000 Betty Trask Prize for his d&eacute;but, Utterly Monkey. Laird's wife Zadie Smith scooped up a Somerset Maugham Award for On Beauty, along with Chris Cleave for Incendiary and Owen Sheers for Skirrid Hill.</p>
