Trapeze has scooped the debut book by screenwriter Matt Knott about his time as a tutor for the private elite.
Jamie Coleman, publishing director, acquired UK and Commonwealth rights, including Canada, to A Class of Their Own: Adventures in Tutoring the Super-Rich. The deal was made with Cathryn Summerhayes at Curtis Brown.
Knott spent more than a decade traveling the world as a tutor to the global elite and A Class of Their Own offers “a fascinating and utterly hilarious glimpse into a world most of us only see speeding by in a luxury people carrier".
Coleman said: “It is rare for me to laugh as much as I have done working on this book. Matt has done something astonishing and written a brilliantly funny, tender and ultimately moving memoir about his unique experiences amongst the 1%. From the competitive smoothie making of the Kensington elite to an impromptu karaoke contest in Moscow, this is a riotously enjoyable romp through that fascinating 'Succession' milieu.”
Knott is now an award-winning filmmaker and song-writer and has written screenplays for Big Talk, Channel 4 and the BFI among others.
He said: “We’ve all day-dreamed of being rich, but only a lucky few of us have been spanked in a sauna by a naked Russian oligarch and lived to tell the tale. Jamie and the whole team at Trapeze have shown a remarkable eye for shaping my catalogue of anecdotes into a wider story about money, class and education. I’m only sorry I couldn’t use any real names. Seriously, you wouldn’t believe what some of these people call their children.”
