Amazon has launched a dedicated Australian Kindle store, selling more than 2m e-books.
The retailer will also sell its latest e-reader, the Kindle Paperwhite, and tablets, the Kindle Fire HD and Kindle Fire HDX, at Australian electronics chain Dick Smith and department store chain Big W.
Around 700,000 books will be priced at AU$3.99 or less, with 1.4m books priced at AU$9.99 or less. Australian self-published writers will also be able to sell their books through Kindle Direct Publishing, earning 70% royalties.
The Kindle reading app is also being made available on Telstra devices, Australia's largest telecoms company, via its TelstraOne app.
Neil Linday, vice-president of Amazon Kindle, said that while millions of Australian customers already used Kindle, the new store would make it easier for them to access. He said: "The new Kindle Store is customised for Australian customers, with local best sellers and curated lists relevant to Australians, and many titles from local publishers and authors such as Tim Winton, Karly Lane and Kate Morton."
