<p>Sir Gerald Kaufman MP has questioned whether the purpose of libraries has been confused by widening demands from the government.

In the final evidence session of the DCMS Select Committee inquiry into public libraries, the committee heard from the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) chairman Mark Wood and chief executive Chris Batt, Lyn Brown of Newham Council, and Tony Duncan of Newcastle-upon-Tyne City Council.
