Psychologist Oliver James has gone to independent publisher Karnac for his next book, in a deal where he gets 50% of profits from his sales.
James, whose six published books have so far sold nearly 300,000 copies through the tills, will not publish Love Bombing: Resetting Your Child’s Emotional Thermostat (28th September, £9.99) with usual publisher Vermilion. James said he still had a good relationship with Vermilion, but had chosen a new publisher because the advance offered for Love Bombing was half the usual sum.
James said: "Publishers are very uncertain about what the future holds because of what is happening in digital, and some are being more cautious about advances. It is curious that more established authors haven’t gone to small publishers under the business model I have with Karnac. Why would I accept a reduced advance when I could get a bigger cut of the royalty this way?"
A Vermilion spokesperson said: "The book that Karmac is publishing is one that we decided was inappropriate to form part of our publishing plans for Oliver and so it was mutually agreed that he was free to publish it independently."
