Myriad Editions has signed a literary debut by Benjamin Johncock.
UK and Commonwealth rights to The Last Pilot were signed from Juliet Pickering at Blake Friedmann.
The book is set in the Mojave Desert in the late 1940s, where US Airforce pilots are battling to break the sound barrier. At the centre is Jim Harrison, who years later is offered the chance to make history as one of the world's first astronauts.
Fiction editor Holly Ainley said: "Benjamin is a passionate and inspiring writer, and his intimate knowledge of the era provides the perfect setting for his moving study of Harrison – a man tested to the limits, physically and mentally."
The book will be published in July 2015, to coincide with US publication by Picador.
