Academic bookseller John Smith is to open four new branches within the next four weeks in time for the beginning of the new university term.
Two branches will open next month at Anglia Ruskin University. The shop in the Chelmsford campus is the former Chapters bookshop and will give the academic retailer around 1,500 sq ft of trading space. Another shop will open at the Cambridge campus; the first time the university has had its own book store.
Another 1,500 sq ft store will open in the University of Dundee. The bookseller has been the university bookshop since the mid-1990s but because of redevelopment work, the shop has not had a permanent site for several years.
The University of Wolverhampton store will open next month and trade on a part-time basis in September and October as well as January and February.
The store openings will bring John Smith & Sons’ portfolio to 27 branches. "We're about to go into our peak period of trading now but we are feeling cautiously optimistic about the coming months," said Alan Leitch, campus director. "We have done a lot of good preparation and we have a good
competitive offer with a good range of books and non-book product."
