John Murray wins auction for Susan Beale debut

John Murray Publishers has acquired a debut novel inspired by a true story.

Publishing director Eleanor Birne bought British Commonwealth rights excluding Canada at auction to The Good Guy by Susan Beale from Caroline Wood at Felicity Bryan Associates.

The Good Guy is set in New England in the years leading up to the sexual revolution.

A suburban husband and father constructs a perfect double life, but when fantasy collides with reality, he is not the only one caught in the ensuing maelstrom.

The novel explores the human capacity for self-deception and is told from the alternating points of view of its three main characters.

Birne said: "The Good Guy is one of the most compelling and accomplished debuts I have read in a long time. It's a rich portrait of the early years of a marriage, of life in 1960s suburban America, and the challenges faced by women at that time. I loved it and found it very moving, as well as impossible to put down."

Beale was brought up in Cape Cod and now lives in the UK. She is a recent graduate of the Bath Spa MA in creative writing.

John Murray will publish The Good Guy in £14.99 hardback on 16th June 2016.
