John Murray is planning to expand its non-fiction publishing output and has appointed Georgina Laycock to the role of publisher.
Laycock joins from Penguin Press where she worked on titles including Pop Goes the Weasel and Atlas of Remote Islands.
She will be working on the commissioning team alongside Kate Parkin, Eleanor Birne, who will return from maternity leave in early 2013, and managing director Roland Philipps.
On growing the non-fiction list, Philipps said the Hachette imprint would be looking to publish 12 to 14 non-fiction titles a year, particularly focusing on books with the potential to capture sales in growing international markets. He said: "We did cut back our non-fiction radically over the last five years-then we were doing 20-odd titles a year, and now that is down to about six to eight titles a year.
"We are now beginning to feel that is too few and we want to do more and particularly more with international sales potential, both in rights and copies, but particularly copies as we have such a strong network of publishers, and some markets are growing, rather than the UK market."
