Joey Barton memoir to Michael Joseph

Michael Joseph has acquired a memoir by controversial footballer and Queen's Park Rangers captain Joey Barton.

Commissioning editor Daniel Bunyard bought world rights from David Riding at MBA Literary agents on behalf of Mel Stein and Ian Montone of Stonemountain Management. MJ will publish the as-yet untitled memoir in autumn 2012.

Bunyard said: "Joey's one of the most exciting and interesting players in the game right now, someone who's long attracted attention as much for what he has to say off the pitch as his performances on it. Clever, controversial and candid in person, it's difficult to imagine a more compelling book about the modern game . . .

"We're delighted he chose Penguin to publish his memoir and are very excited to begin working with him."

Midfielder Barton previously played for Newcastle United and Manchester City, as well as playing for England. However, he has received as much press coverage for his performances off the pitch than on, serving jail time for assault and affray.

Over the summer, his number of Twitter folllowers rose to more than 580,000, with Barton variously tweeting Smiths lyrics and quotations from George Orwell.
