James Herbert’s daughter Kerry Herbert and fantasy writer Sarah Pinborough are among the judges for the inaugural James Herbert Horror Writing Prize.
The £2,000 prize, set up by Pan Macmillan in Herbert’s honour, aims to find a new generation of horror writers and ties in with the 40th anniversary of the first publication of Herbert’s debut The Rats, for which Pan Mac will be releasing a special anniversary paperback and a collectors’ hardback edition.
Herbert died last year at the age of 69.
Joining Kerry Herbert, who is m.d. of Stand-Up Marketing, and Pinborough on the judging panel are horror author Ramsey Campbell; the University of Birkbeck academic Dr Tony Venezia; and Rosie Fletcher, associate editor of Total Film and contributor to the annual FrightFest film festival.
The panel will be chaired by Tom Hunter, director of the Serendip Foundation which manages the Arthur C Clarke Award honouring science fiction first published in Britain.
Publishers have until 1st October to submit their entries for the award to Pan Macmillan via their online submission form.
The award will be given annually, and in addition to the money, the winner will receive a specially designed commemorative stature.
The prize is open to horror novels written in English and published in the UK and Ireland between 1st January 2014 and 31st December 2014.
A shortlist of five novels will be announced in January 2015 with the winner announced at an awards ceremony in March 2015.
