James Dawson reveals male-to-female transition

YA author James Dawson has announced that he is transitioning to being a woman.

In a statement, Dawson said: “About 18 months ago I started what will be a very long journey into living as a woman. It was while writing This Book Is Gay (Hot Key Books) that I realised I had far more in common with trans women than I did with gay men and started speaking to a gender therapist. I am now on a waiting list to receive treatment from specialist doctors and nurses.

“People have already noticed me physically changing and I will continue to do so over the coming months. It’s a slow and complicated process and, with regret, I may have to take a step back from some events, and focus on writing.”

He added: “For now, please continue to refer to me as ‘he’/‘his’ until I am further along in my transition. I have the best readers in the world and I just know my gender identity isn’t going to be an issue for a second.”

This Book Is Gay was first published in 2014 and is a guide to teenagers and young people about being LGBT.

Dawson was crowned Queen of Teen in 2014 and was shortlisted earlier this year for The Bookseller’s YA Book Prize with his novel Say Her Name.

Next year, Hot Key will publish Dawson’s Mind Your Head, a guide to mental health, and the World Book Day novella Spot the Difference. The publisher said it will confirm what name Dawson publishes the new titles under at a later date.

Zac Brewer, a US YA author, announced his transition from female to male earlier this year. At the time, Brewer told Publishers Weekly he was not worried about his fans' support. “I don’t worry about losing my Minions. We are a special band of misfits and they have been accepting and supportive all along.”

He added: "I am lucky that I can share my transition with the Minions and have them along for the ride as I go through my second puberty and develop into the man I am inside.”
