Little, Brown Book Group's Constable has acquired two books in a new crime series set in contemporary Jakarta.
Publishing director Krystyna Green bought world English language rights to A Dark Centre by Julian Lees in a two-book deal from Kate Hordern at the Kate Hordern Literary Agency.
A Dark Centre introduces Inspektur Ruud Pujasumarta, who is horrified and baffled by the slum murder of a middle-aged woman. The victim has been choked to death whilst tied to her bed, and the murderer has amputated her left hand and left a mah jong tile in her throat.
Lees grew up in Hong Kong, went to a boarding school in England and attended Cambridge University before returning to the Far East. He now lives with his family in Malaysia.
Green said: “We are delighted with this two-book acquisition as the exotic location and vast cast of local characters is original and colourful, and a far cry from the dark thrillers of Scandinavia or inner cities of the UK.”
A Dark Centre will be published by Constable in October 2016.
