Writer Jacqueline Atta-Hayward has been announced as the winner of the Bad Form x Bad Love Short Story Competition run by literary magazine Bad Form Review and author Maame Blue.
The competition was open to Black, Asian, and racialised community writers based in the UK. Atta-Hayward will win publication in Bad Form’s eighth print issue, two original, framed artworks by artist Becca Dufie, a virtual coffee with author Maame Blue, and a £150 cash prize.
Blue said: “I was blown away by the creative responses to the prompt and the calibre of the writing from those shortlisted. As a debut author myself, it was writing competitions like these that gave me the confidence boost to keep going and eventually find a home for Bad Love with Jacaranda, so I’m excited to showcase the writers of the future with Bad Form!”
The competition called for entries to write a 500-word short story inspired by lines from Blue’s debut Bad Love. Editor-in-chief of Bad Form, Amy Mae Baxter, noted: “Jacqueline’s story really sparkled. In the judging room, it was immediately clear that her ability to capture beauty in such a short piece was something very special. I am so pleased to have been able to offer such a lovely opportunity to a group of budding writers.”
The shortlist was made up of Amanda Afua Aboajewah, Settit Beyene, Oluchi Ezeh, Natalie Morris, Gamu Nhengu and Daniel Ogba.
