Little, Brown imprint Corsair is to publish Jack Underwood's first work of non-fiction, the essay collection Not Even This.
Editorial director Sarah Castleton acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Harriet Moore at David Higham Associates. The title will publish in hardback in May 2021.
The synopsis describes: "Not Even This is a lyric meditation on uncertainty. The birth of Underwood’s daughter during a time of extreme global anxiety led him to reflect on the importance of language and poetry in uncertain times, as a form through which we might learn how to live within complexity rather than deny or explain it away—and thereby understand and inhabit our precarious life more fluently."
Castleton said: "Jack’s work is capacious, attentive and extremely clever. Not Even This emerged from and arrives at a time of overwhelming existential uncertainty, and Jack brilliantly articulates how poetry can act as a necessary form by which we may come to trust in and work with the 'I don’t know' of a life."
Underwood has previously published poetry collections Happiness (Faber Poetry, 2015) and Solo for Mascha Voice (Prototype Publishing, 2018).
He commented: "I have been writing Not Even This for about six years now, and I have struggled to keep up with all the new uncertainty in the world during that time, not least as a new father. So I am especially delighted to be joining Corsair, and working with Sarah, who is such a keen advocate for poetic thinking, puzzling, and writing as an interrogative and imaginative practice."
