Food writer and blogger Jack Monroe has fully funded a new cookbook one day after launching it on Kickstarter.
On the Kickstarter page, Monroe, whose first two cookbooks were published by Penguin Random House imprint Michael Joseph, said the book will feature 100 budget recipes and will be written in the same style of the first book, A Girl Called Jack. Chapters will include ‘Eat Your Greens’, ‘Super Soups’ and ‘Beans, Pulses and Lentils’.
The Kickstarter campaign launched yesterday (3rd December) and reached its £8,000 target in only six and a half hours. The project currently has 566 backers, who have pledged more than £16,000.
Monroe did not say why they decided to self-fund the project but said on the Kickstarter page that “I’ve stripped it back from the gorgeous gloss that was book two, as beautiful as it was, the glass slipper didn’t quite fit my budget foot, so I’m going back to basics”.
Monroe said on twitter: “Yesterday I hit the darkest rock bottom for a very long time. Today 500 strangers backed my new book. Thank-you, thank-you. Humbled & amazed…. [I] Cannot begin to explain what this means for me and SB [small boy]. Biggest challenge of my life...but y'all believe I can do it so I best get on with it!”
A Michael Joseph spokesperson declined to comment on the project when contacted by The Bookseller. Monroe’s agent, Rosemary Scoular at United Agents, did not respond to a request for comment in time before publication.
