Isle of Mull indie closes doors for last time

An independent bookshop on the remote Scottish Isle of Mull has closed its doors after 40 years. Coffee and Books in Dervaig, on the Isle of Mull, part of the Inner Hebrides, closed last Friday (13th May) after its owner David Pitman decided to retire to Glasgow.

The indie has served the local community of Dervaig since it was founded in 1970. Stevie Thompson, a sales rep for Oxford University Press and 2011 winner of the Bookseller Association's academic sales rep of the year award, said: "I always looked forward to meetings at Coffee and Books. It was a delightful selling experience, but such was the knowledge and character of Mr Pitman, more often than not it turned into a book-buying experience for me."
