Indigo acquires debut by Irish academic

Orion YA imprint Indigo has acquired a debut novel about "lost memories, lost times and lost lives" by Irish academic Sarah Moore Fitzgerald.

Managing director and publisher Fiona Kennedy bought world rights in a two-book deal from Jo Unwin at Conville & Walsh, with the debut, Back to Blackbrick, to be published in spring 2013. Agent Unwin described the book as being like "Tom's Midnight Garden as written by Roddy Doyle".

Kennedy said: "Sarah Moore Fitzgerald is an extraordinarily good writer. In all my years in publishing she is one of the authors whose work I feel most fortunate, privileged and excited to be able to publish. We're all looking forward to a sensational launch for Back to Blackbrick. It's a novel that will make a huge impact on everyone who reads it."

Moore Fitzgerald is a professor and associate vice-president at the University of Limerick. She has published several non-fiction books on teaching, learning and academic writing, and runs regular writers' retreats for academics and students.
