An illustrated edition of A Game of Thrones, the first book in George R R Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, will be published to mark the 20th anniversary of the book.
A Game of Thrones was first published in the UK on August 1996. A spokesperson for Bantam Spectra, which will publish the title in the US, said: "In celebration of the fantasy masterpiece that started a cultural phenomenon, we’re excited to announce the publication of a special illustrated edition. With gorgeous full-page illustrations to open every chapter, the mystery, intrigue, romance, and adventure of this magnificent saga come to life as never before."
George R R Martin said in a blog post: "An anniversary like this requires something special, something more than just a reprint and a new novel. This new edition will be very special, I think. Same story, of course. But we've added an introduction by the [comedian] John Hodgman... and a truly astonishing amount of artwork... a total of seventy-three black and white interior illustrations, and eight spectacular full colour plates."
Some of the illustrations that will appear in the book have been taken from other sources such as the Ice & Fire calendars or the Game of Thrones card and board games, but 38 of the pieces are entirely new and never-before-seen.
A Game of Thrones: The Illustrated Edition will be published by HarperCollins in the UK on 18th October 2016. The books in the A Song of Ice and Fire series are published in the UK by HarperVoyager.
Earlier this year, Martin announced that The Winds of Winter, the latest installment in the series, is "months away" from completion. It was originally due to be published in March 2016 to coincide with the sixth series of the TV show. In his latest blog post, Martin said he was "still working" on the book and had "no announcement to make on that front".
In other Game of Thrones news, Chronicle Books has partnered with HBO, the producer of the "Game of Thrones" TV show, to publish a colouring book titled HBO's Game of Thrones Coloring Book. It will be published on 1st November priced £11.99.
