Ilex Press has acquired The Story of the Bauhaus by art historian Frances Ambler to celebrate the seminal art and design movement's 100th year.
The book is piched as a "lively" introduction to the movement, which began in 1919 when Walter Gropius founded an art school in Weimar, Germany, with a vision of bridging the gap between art and industry.
Ambler's The Story of the Bauhaus traces 100 personalities, designs, ideas and events that shaped the movement, with coverage extending to the likes of Paul Klee, Walter Gropius, Anni Albers and Wassily Kandinsky, as well as "the wild parties and groundbreaking events" that would go on to revolutionise contemporary design. The book also explores the new ways of thinking that were discovered.
Commissioning editor Zara Anvari, who acquired world rights in all languages from the author directly, said: "In this beautiful book, Frances brings to life the school’s intricate, bizarre and inspirational story and celebrates the favourite modernist icons that guided it. We are thrilled to be releasing the book ahead of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Bauhaus, a year full of must-see exhibitions and celebratory events."
Ambler, based in London, specialises in 20th-century design and is the author of Mid-Century Modern: Icons of Design (Thames and Hudson). She has worked with museums and galleries worldwide, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, London's Victoria and Albert Museum and the Scottish Sculpture Trust.
She commented: "I’ve loved delving deeper into the Bauhaus: the personalities and ideas that shaped the school, the inspirations behind their most famous designs and some of the myths that have sprung up around it too. Parties, intrigues and a cast of talented, idealistic characters – it’s been a joy to have such great source material with which to work. Bauhaus may almost be 100 but I’ve enjoyed discovering how fresh its ideas and the ambitions can still seem today."
The Story of the Bauhaus will be published by Ilex Press on 11th October as a £19.99 paperback.
