Bold block colours and striking symbols define a new series of Icon books designed to reach young professionals intent on self-improvement.
The guides aim to present weighty subjects in such areas as cognitive behavioural therapy, emotional intelligence and child psychology using a combination of wit and authority and give readers examples of self-enriching exercises to follow.
The pocket-sized books, written by established professionals, are priced at £6.99 each and aim to “help people achieve their goals”. The first six psychology-based paperback titles will be out in August, with the remaining 16 to be released over the course of 2012. Subjects will include philosophy, science and business. The books complement Icon’s series, Introducing: The Graphic Guides, which are the same size and have sold more than three million copies worldwide.
Icon Books m.d. Simon Flynn said: “We wanted to make the books look clear and accessible and have a design that travels across a range of titles but which doesn’t look dull in itself.
“We are aiming them at people who are interested in self-improvement. We wanted the books to be attractive, but have credibility.”
Marketing plans include Twitter and Facebook publicity campaigns, which are already in operation, and the possibility of developing an interactive mobile phone app.
The publisher also hopes to attract wide media coverage for the new series.“We hope digital will be a big part of this . . . The titles will also be available as e-books,” Flynn added.
