Victor Hugo’s classic novel The Hunchback of Notre-Dame has jumped to the top of Amazon France’s bestseller list following the cathedral’s devastating fire.
As of Thursday morning there were four separate editions of the novel in the online store’s top 10 list, with a number of books on the building’s history, including one retailing at €85, also seeing a spike in sales.
One edition of the 1831 Hugo novel, published by Le Livre de Poche, was at number one on the list, with other publications at number three, four and 10.
Since Monday’s blaze, more than €800m has been raised to help rebuild the famous Gothic cathedral.
The building burned for around seven hours on Monday night, destroying its spire and wooden interior. However, much of its contents, façade and towers were saved by fire crews.
Some French booksellers are calling for publishers of Hugo’s book to make a donation to the fund, the BBC has reported.
Disney, which created an animated film of the story has now pledged £3.8m to the fund.
