Colin Hughes has been appointed as m.d. of the HarperCollins Education Division, with HC c.e.o. Victoria Barnsley calling education "a key growth target for our business."
Hughes' appointment follows the departure of Nigel Ward, who led the division for four years.
Hughes launched digital curriculum online business Learn.co.uk for the Guardian group in 2000 and has most recently been director of Guardian Business and Professional. Guardian Professional includes businesses handling digital education content development and learning platform build.
Barnsley said: "Education is a key growth target for our business, having been strengthened by acquisitions, international and digital expansion in the last few years. Colin's experience in building both an online education business from scratch and leading a bigger international branded content business will enable us to take the Collins Education portfolio to the next level."
Hughes said he looked forward to growing the business "especially on the new digital platforms, and internationally, where we see significant opportunities."
Hughes is a member of the executive committee and will report to Barnsley.
