Hughes-Hallett wins Duff Cooper Prize

Lucy Hughes-Hallett’s book The Pike: Gabriele D’Annunzio (Fourth Estate) has won the 2013 Pol Roger Duff Cooper Prize.

Hughes-Hallet’s biography of the womanising, war-mongering Italian poet has already won the 2013 Costa Biography award and the 2013 Samuel Johnson Prize.

It was shortlisted alongside Hermione Lee’s Penelope Fitzgerald (Chatto & Windus), James Andrew Taylor’s Walking Wounded: Vernon Scannell (Oxford University Publishing), Roderick Beaton’s Byron’s War (Cambridge University Press) and William Darymple’s Return of a King (Bloomsbury).

The annual Pol Roger Duff Cooper Prize, which was launched in 1956, celebrates the best in non-fiction writing. It is sponsored by champagne producers Pol Roger. Last year’s winner was Strindberg: A Life by Sue Prideaux (Yale University Press), about Swedish playwright August Strindberg.
