H&S acquires debut from 15-year-old

Hodder & Stoughton has acquired The Catalyst, the first novel in a fantasy crossover series from 15-year-old debut author Helena Coggan.

The book, which Coggan started writing when she was just 13, is about teenager Rose Elmsworth, who lives in a world divided into the Gifted (who have magic powers) and the non-magical Ashkind. Elmsworth has a job at law-enforcement agency the Department when an old enemy threatens to start a catastrophic war.

Associate publisher Kate Howard found out about the book through a “long-standing contact” and bought world rights directly from the author. “Clever, imaginative and with jaw-dropping cliffhangers, Helena’s clear talent at such a young age makes this incredibly special,” she said.

Hodder & Stoughton will publish The Catalyst in hardback and e-book on the 19th February 2015. Two further books in the series are planned.
