Hot Key Books has confirmed that Juno Dawson’s backlist titles, printed with the author’s previous name, James Dawson, will remain in circulation until they come up for reprint.
The author announced her male-to-female transition in October and in future all of her new books, including this month’s Mind Your Head, will be published under the name Juno Dawson. However, Hot Key said her previous titles will remain in the system until new copies are needed, at which point it will use the name Juno, with the explanation “previously written as James Dawson”. Online, all titles will be listed under the author’s new name, but within the product descriptions Hot Key will reiterate that the titles were previously published under the name James.
A Hot Key spokesperson said: “It’s an interesting challenge—and I imagine a new one for publishing—but really a delightful one when I think how exciting it is that Juno’s books can sit on the shelf with the name that really belongs with her.”
Dawson has written several books for Hot Key, including This Book is Gay, All of the Above and Say Her Name, which was shortlisted for the YA Book Prize last year. She has also published YA novels for Orion, which did not respond to a request for comment.
