Hot Key announced as Sutherland’s UK publisher

Hot Key Books has acquired the UK and Commonwealth rights (excluding Australia) to We Were Never Here by Australian YA author Krystal Sutherland.

The story, which is a teen love story set in a high school, is described as like the film '500 Days of Summer', by way of Rainbow Rowell and John Green.

Editor-at-large Emma Matthewson struck a deal for two books with Catherine Clarke at Felicity Bryan Associates, who was acting on behalf of Catherine Drayton at InkWell Management.

Matthewson said: “As soon as I started reading We Were Never Here, I got that feeling I really, really needed this book to finish just as enticingly and wittily and cleverly as it began - and Krystal achieves exactly that, triumphantly so. We knew would have to move fast to be the publisher and we could not be more thrilled that Krystal is joining the Hot Key list.”

Deals have also been announced in North America (Putnam), Australia (Penguin Random House), Spain (Planeta), France, (Pocket), Denmark (Lindhardt & Ringhof), and Norway (Gyldendal). Auctions are ongoing in Brazil, Holland and Germany.

English language publication is set for autumn 2016.

Born in Australia in 1990, Sutherland has lived in Sydney and Amsterdam where she worked as a magazine editor and foreign correspondent for Hijacked, one of Australia’s largest youth culture websites. In the past she has edited Sydney’s Blitz magazine, interned at Bloomsbury Publishing and was shortlisted for the Queensland Young Writers Award.
