Hodder & Stoughton has signed a collection of work from 21-year-old poet, model and Instagram star Sonny Hall.
Publisher Briony Gowlett acquired world rights directly from Hall for the previously self-published The Blues Comes With Good News. Released on 5th September with 10 new poems, the collection ranges from addiction, self-destruction and identity, to romantic relationships, his journey to recovery and ongoing mental health issues.
Hall entered a treatment centre for alcohol and drug addiction at the age of 18 after losing his biological mother to a heroin overdose. Three months into his treatment, he started writing poems as a way of ordering “all the madness” in his head and since then his works have led to an Instagram following of more than 124,000 people.
Gowlett said: “Sonny has already lived a lot of life and has found in poetry a way to express the ups and downs we all experience at some point. He’s an incredible talent and I’m delighted to be working with him on getting his poetry into the hands of as many readers as possible.”
Hall added: “I feel overjoyed and extremely privileged that Hodder and Stoughton are giving me this opportunity to expose the world through my words. The Blues Comes With Good News’ aim is to rid nonsense, as some days, as we all do, I feel swamped by life’s rubbish. This book is an unapologetically honest streak that gratefully neighbours years of maybe naïve or maybe somewhat ignorant crooked ways of living. For me, it is the only thing that makes real sense of the harsh sickly junk that can brew and brew from any easy or tricky happenings through living. With that and writing, I always finally form a telling and raw charm within these lessons, that can then be appreciated.”
