Hodder to publish Heartstopper Yearbook with never-before-seen illustrations

Hodder is to release The Heartstopper Yearbook, "a joyful trip" into the world of the graphic novel series by author and illustrator Alice Oseman.

Rachel Wade, senior commissioning editor at Hachette Children’s Group, acquired world rights from Claire Wilson at RCW. The Heartstopper Yearbook will publish on 13th October 2022 and will be the first full-colour Heartstopper book. The book will also be published in the US by Graphix, an imprint of Scholastic.

The publisher said it will be "packed full of exclusive content from the Heartstopper universe" including "never-before-seen illustrations and comics", a look back at Oseman’s Heartstopper artwork over the years, character profiles, trivia, and insights into her creative process, narrated by a cartoon version of Oseman herself. Its final cover will be revealed next year.

Her graphic novel series follows two teenage boys, Nick and Charlie, as they meet at a British grammar school, quickly become friends and fall in love. Each volume navigates the ups and downs of first loves, friendships, coming out, and mental health, with a warm cast of supporting characters. There is a forthcoming live-action Netflix adaptation starring Kit Connor and Joe Locke as Nick and Charlie, produced by See-Saw Films.

It was originally a webcomic on Tumblr and Tapas, and Oseman initially crowdfunded a limited print run edition, meeting her funding goal in less than two hours. Hodder Children’s Books published Heartstopper Volume One more widely in spring 2019, followed by Volume Two in July of the same year. Since then, Hodder Children’s Books has published a further two volumes and a colouring book. Heartstopper Volume Five, the eagerly awaited final volume, will publish on the 2nd February 2023.

Oseman said: "I have always wanted to create a book like this for Heartstopper, and I'm so excited to be making it a reality! I can't wait to share full-colour Heartstopper artwork, new and old, with readers for the first time in book form."
