Hodder Children's Books has bought a new novel by David Almond, past winner of the Carnegie Medal and Whitbread Award. A companion novel to Skellig, Mina's Story will be published in 2010. The deal was brokered by Catherine Clark at Felicity Bryan Agency and she holds the translation rights.
Anne McNeil, publishing director for Hodder Children's Books, said: "Skellig is one of the most imaginative and beautiful children's books that has been published for this generation; this is why it has lasted so long." She added: "David is re-entering the cobweb world which has so entranced a whole host of readers of all ages, and I am utterly positive that he will come up with another masterpiece.”
Almond said: "Mina was always the most important character in Skellig. She jumped into the book ready-formed, with her love of birds, of William Blake, with her sternness, her eccentricity, her capacity for joy, her courage and her imagination. She’s stayed with me ever since."
In March Hodder will publish a special tie-in edition of Skellig to coincide with a Sky 1 feature film, starring Tim Roth and John Simm, to be aired on TV in Spring 2009.
