Harvill Secker has bought world English rights for a historical novel by Meira Chand. James Gurbutt, commercial director, acquired A Different Sky from Georgina Capel, director of Capel & Land.
Chand, who lives in Singapore, was personally approached by the president of the country to write a story about the Malays, Chinese, Indians and Eurasians living in Singapore. The book begins in the 1920s and encompasses all the major events of the 20th century. The title will be published by Harvill Secker in hardback in spring 2010.
Gurbutt said he is, "thrilled to be publishing such a wonderful, rich, epic novel which captures Asia’s multiracial melting pot”.
Chand has previously published a selection of fiction titles in the UK: The Gossamer Fly (Century), Last Quadrant (Century); The Bonsai Tree (Century); The Painted Cage (Vintage); House of the Sun (Hutchinson); A Far Horizon (Phoenix); and A Choice Of Evils (Phoenix).
