Simon & Schuster will this autumn publish a picture book version of Hillary Clinton's 1996 non-fiction title It Takes A Village. Separately, it will also publish a collection of essays by Clinton.
The publisher said: "Over twenty years ago, the original It Takes a Village inspired the nation to think critically about how the choices made today, to raise our children and support families, will determine how we will face the challenges of the future. Now considered a classic, the book spent twenty weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, was published in over 20 foreign markets, and earned wide critical and consumer acclaim. The picture book edition will bring this inspiring message to a new generation in a format that is perfect for story time and bedtime."
The picture book will be released in September priced £12.99, illustrated by Marla Frazee. The deal was struck between S&S president and chief executive in the US Carolyn Reidy and Robert B. Barnett of Williams & Connolly, with Steven Malk at Writers House represented the illustrator.
Clinton's as yet untitled essay collection will be inspired by “the hundreds of quotations [Clinton] has been collecting for decades”, according to S&S.
“These are the words I live by,’ said the US presidential candidate, who will her experiences in the 2016 campaign. “These quotes have helped me celebrate the good times, laugh at the absurd times, persevere during the hard times and deepen my appreciation of all life has to offer.”
She added: “I hope by sharing these words and my thoughts about them, the essays will be meaningful for readers.”
Reidy acquired world publishing rights in all formats to the essay collection from Robert B. Barnett of Williams & Connolly. The book will be published in the US, UK, Australia, Canada and India in print and audiobook formats.
Ian Chapman, chief executive and publisher of S&S UK, said: “We are extremely proud to be publishing Hillary Clinton’s new collection of essays. The publication of her memoirs in 2014 was a real publishing highlight and we are thrilled to be continuing our relationship with one of the most admired women in the world. We look forward to bringing her stories to UK readers this autumn.”
Clinton also published her memoir Hard Choices with S&S ahead of her presidential campaign.
