"Heroes and Heroines" is the theme for this year's Children's Book Week, which runs from today (1st October) to 7th October.
Thousands of schools across the country are set to take part, with participating children encouraged to engage with books in creative ways, such as dressing up as book characters, holding read-a-thons and staging dramatisations of books, plays and poems.
Children's laureate Julia Donaldson said: "I am delighted to give my full support to Children's Book Week . . . This year, it falls within my Laureate Library Tour, and I especially hope that parents, carers and teachers will take the opportunity to visit their local library with children to explore and discover the treasure trove of books which they can find there."
Resources for schools can be downloaded for free from the Booktrust website, at www.childrensbookweek.org.uk.
