William Heinemann is to publish a prequel to Mario Puzo's The Godfather series, written by author Ed Falco and based on an unproduced screenplay by Puzo.
Publisher Jason Arthur bought UK and Commonwealth rights (excluding Canada) from Tony Peake at Peake Associates on behalf of Donadio & Olson in New York.
Set in 1933, depression-era New York, The Family Corleone takes place before the mafia family have risen to power, telling the story of how Vito Corleone fought to survive and earn his place in the criminal underworld.
Tony Puzo, Mario Puzo's son and executor of his estate, said: "With The Family Corleone, Ed Falco has written a novel that is true to Mario Puzo's legacy, and will be cherished by all Godfather fans".
Falco has previously written four story collections, three novels and plays, and is a professor of English at Virginia Tech.
William Heinemann will publish in hardback in July 2012, with an Arrow paperback to follow in 2013.
