Heinemann buys crime debut

William Heinemann has acquired a debut crime novel, the first in a series to feature civilian investigator Catherine Berlin, written by Annie Hauxwell.

Publisher Jason Arthur bought UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding ANZ, to the title, In Her Blood, from Sarah Ballard at United Agents. It will be published in trade paperback and e-book in May 2012.

In the novel, Berlin, who works for the Financial Services Agency and is also a long-standing heroin addict, finds the almost-headless body of her informant, 'Juliet Bravo', in the Thames. Her death is linked to an investigation of local loan shark Archie Doyle, but when Berlin's own methods are blamed for the murder, she realises there is a greater danger.

Arthur said: "I'm absolutely delighted to be publishing Annie's debut. In Her Blood is first-rate crime fiction, and introduces an exceptionally talented writer to the genre. In Catherine Berlin, Annie has created a wonderfully original and compelling creation. I know we will delight in her company for many years to come."
