Hegarty's 'Darkmouth' gets film deal

Alcon Entertainment has acquired the film rights to Darkmouth, the newly released children’s fantasy novel by Irish author Shane Hegarty, for a "very high" six-figure dollar sum.

The book, published today (29th January) by HarperCollins Children’s Books, is the first in a monster-hunting adventure series for children aged 8-12.

US company Alcon, makers of "PS, I Love You", acquired the film rights from Marianne Gunn O’Connor of the Marianne Gunn O’Connor Literary, Film and TV Agency.

“This is the biggest film deal I have ever negotiated,” said Gunn. “If all goes to plan, we can expect cinema release in 2017. Alcon has been looking for a property like this for a number of years and their vision is for a big budget live action adventure. It is highly unusual and extremely exciting to have such a deal in place before the book is even published and is a huge vote of confidence in Darkmouth".

The film will be produced by Simon Brooks and Kira Davis, who will work alongside Alcon co-founders Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson. Warner will distribute the film in the US.
