Headline Review has bought the rights to an "intense and very special" debut novel, The Butterfly Cabinet by Bernie McGill.
Publisher Mary-Anne Harrington bought British Commonweath rights excluding Canada, with exclusive Europe from Clare Alexander at Aitken Alexander.
Harrington said the title is, "a refreshingly unexpected look at motherhood, at turns unflinching, and at others full of warmth and heart. McGill's voice is remarkable".
The Butterfly Cabinet is told in two voices and is set in the late 19th century. It looks at the day a child dies in a big house on an Irish estate. Headline Review will publish the title in August 2010.
McGill won the 2008 Zoetrope All-Story Short Fiction Contest for her short story Sleepwalkers.
