Headline has acquired two novels by debut author Sarah Hilary, with the first book to be the beginning of a new crime series.
Deputy publishing director for fiction Vicki Mellor bought British Commonwealth and European, non-exclusive Canada, rights in the novels from Jane Gregory of Gregory & Co. The series will feature D K Marnie Rome, a woman with a tragic past and a particular insight into domestic violence.
Headline will publish the first book, Someone Else's Skin, in early 2014, with the second novel to follow a year later. Translation rights have been sold in Germany, France, Holland and Italy to date.
Mellor said: "I have been looking for some time for an author who we can launch onto the UK crime scene with fanfare and we have definitely found that in Sarah. I loved Someone Else's Skin with its intricate twists and turns and I was immediately drawn into the issues of domestic violence that Sarah deals with so brilliantly.
"Sarah has a wonderful and unique ability to create characters and stories that will resonate with readers. We have a clear opportunity to build a new crime series for the future with an author who is savvy and well-connected in the crime world already, and we couldn’t be happier to welcome her into the Headline fold."
Hilary won the Cheshire Prize for Literature in 2012.
