Headline buys Accent's Thomas

Headline has acquired The Oyster Catcher by Jo Thomas, originally published as an e-only edition by independent Accent Press.

Emily Griffin acquired world English language rights to The Oyster Catcher plus three other novels at auction from Hannah Ferguson at The Marsh Agency.

Accent Press published The Oyster Catcher was published as an e-book in November last year, and it has been a Kindle bestseller, selling 110,000 copies in its first five months of release. It tells the story of Fiona Clutterbuck, who escapes her wedding after being jilted at the altar, winding up in a village on the Galway coast where she discovers a new life and romance on an oyster farm.

Griffin said: “As soon as I finished reading The Oyster Catcher I felt determined that we must track Jo down and bring her to the Headline list. Her novel showcases commercial women’s fiction at its best.

“It effortlessly transports the reader to the Irish coast and introduces a cast of characters who are engaging, funny and utterly down-to-earth – and Jo’s incredible e-book sales demonstrate how readers have already taken her to their hearts.”

Thomas worked for many years as a reporter and producer for BBC Radio 5, Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour and Radio 2’s The Steve Wright Show and in 2013 won the RNA Katie Fforde Bursary. She now writes full time.

Headline will take over the e-book edition of The Oyster Catcher with immediate effect, and will publish a mass market paperback edition in November.

Thomas’ next novel, The Olive Branch, will be published by Headline in February 2015 in e-book, with a physical edition following in May.
