HC's Killer Reads makes 'open submission' buys

Killer Reads, HarperFiction’s new digital-first crime and thriller list, has made its first acquisitions through an open submission process it held last summer.

Sarah Hodgson, deputy publishing director and Kate Stephenson, editor, have acquired three new titles from the hundreds of submissions, as well as a further three titles through literary agents.

The titles acquired through the open submissions process were: psychological thriller Mindsight by Chris Curran; US thriller Acoustic Shadows by Patrick Kendrick; and British historical crime novel An Act of Mercy by J J Durham. The other titles acquired are: Someone Out There, a psychological thriller by Catherine Hunt which was bought from agent Mary Greenham; London-based thriller, Tuesday Falling, by S Williams, agented by Anne-Marie Doulton; and Sheena Lambert’s 1970s-set Irish crime novel The Lake, which was bought from agent Ger Nichol.

Hodgson said: “We can’t wait to introduce our wonderful new authors to the discerning crime and thriller community and look forward to hearing what readers think of them. We’ve been lucky enough to acquire a broad variety of novels across the spectrum of the crime and thriller genre to launch the list with, but what they all share is that page-turning quality that keeps you reading long after you should have turned the light out.”

Stephenson said that the quality of writing and storytelling the duo was discovering was "incredibly inspiring", adding: "These authors really deserve to be published, and we are so pleased that they have chosen to make Killer Reads their home.”

The first title to be published by Killer Reads will be Mindsight, on 19th February 2015, with the imprint then releasing one to two titles per month.
