Hachette Children’s Group has snapped up geneticist Adam Rutherford’s first non-fiction book for younger readers.
Laura Horsley, editorial director, secured world rights to Where Are You Really From? from Will Francis at Jankow and Nesbit. It will be published in paperbook, e-book and audio on 29th September 2022 by the imprint Wren & Rook. The book will be co-created with children’s author E L Norry and illustrator Adam Ming.
Rutherford is the author of Weidenfeld & Nicolson titles A Brief History of Everyone Who Ever Lived and How to Argue with a Racist. The publisher said his latest book will take children "on an extraordinary adventure through millions of years of human history, from the Kings and Queens they descend from, to the way humans have migrated far and wide around the world". It added: "Along the way, readers will be armed with a deeper understanding of science and history, and learn how to dismantle common myths of who we really are, such as what race is, where we come from, and what it really means to be human."
Horsley said: "Adam is a phenomenal communicator, storyteller and a master at making even the most complex science seem relatively straightforward. His adult books have rightfully been huge successes, and we are now thrilled to see him reimagining his ideas for a younger audience, alongside Emma Norry and Adam Ming, in this much-needed, myth-busting deep-dive into what really makes us human."
Rutherford added: "Over the years, many parents and teachers have asked me about resources for bringing the wonder of evolution, the history of race and other scientific ideas to younger readers. Ultimately, I decided the best thing to do was to write it myself. So I’m super excited to be doing this book, with Emma Norry and Adam Ming, so we can bring my passion for science and its importance to our culture, to the next generation."
