HarperCollins Children's Books has bought a new Percy The Park Keeper adventure by Nick Butterworth as it announced it is broadening the series even further.
The new title will publish in 2021 which will also see the launch of a new brand extension range that will include concept learning and seasonal activity books. World rights in all titles were negotiated by Kate Burns, colour publisher, with Veronique Baxter at David Higham Associates.
HarperCollins said: “Just in time for the autumn comes a beautiful new hardback picture book. Featuring Nick Butterworth’s trademark wit and warmth, this hilarious new story about friendship and kindness follows hedgehog’s seemingly impossible dream of flying. When a friendly bird stops off in Percy’s park on her way back home across the sea, she needs the hedgehog’s help and perhaps there is a way for his dream to come true after all?"
The series has been going for more than 30 years and has sold over nine million books sold across 16 languages, according to the publisher. Now his youngest fans will be able to learn letters and numbers with help from Percy himself. A Percy the Park Keeper Book: 123 publishes in February 2021 followed by A Percy the Park Keeper Book: ABC in April 2021.
Young children will be able to channel their inner park keeper and learn all about the natural world in two Percy the Park Keeper Nature Trail and Nature Explorer books publishing in May and September 2021. “Bursting with amazing nature facts, photographs and illustrations these handbooks will include seasonal activities and crafts plus forager hunts for the whole family,” the publisher said.
Burns said: “Percy the Park Keeper continues to delight children everywhere with his good-humoured escapades together with his animal friends around the park. The celebration of kindness and the outdoors has never been more important than now, so I am excited that 2021 will bring a whole new world of publishing to Percy fans new and old. From gorgeous young picture books to fun-packed nature trail books - full of activities for children to discover the outdoor world around them - there is something new for every Percy fan. The icing on the cake will be a brand-new hardback picture book - the perfect end to a Percy year.”
Butterworth said: “I am as excited about this new story as any I have written and/or illustrated. I wish I could reveal more. All I can say is that the idea fired me to pick up my pen and the task of creating the illustrations has reminded me of how fortunate I am to be able to combine work and pleasure in this way.”
