Hodder Children’s Books is to publish a series of children’s books inspired by Lupo, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s cocker spaniel, by debut author Aby King.
King was moved to create The Adventures of a Royal Dog series after wondering what life would be like as a palace dog. The first title, Lupo and the Secret of Windsor Castle, will be published in September, with illustrations from Sam Usher. Three more titles are planned.
Jon Appleton, editorial director for fiction, acquired the world rights for four titles from Piers Blofeld at Sheil Land Associates.
Appleton described the series as “One Hundred and One Dalmatians for today’s readers, offering a totally immersive animal world, with heroism, treachery”.
In the first book, Lupo, beloved palace pup, gets accused of a crime he did not commit – an attack on a swan. In his efforts to prove his innocence, he crosses paths with a corgi who has discovered a centuries-old secret, which he is determined to use against England.
