HarperCollins sold more than 10,000 e-books of George R R Martin's A Dance with Dragons last week, its biggest digital performance for a new release.
The book, Martin's fifth in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, sold 28,840 copies last week in bookshops. HarperCollins m.d. Simon Johnson told The Bookseller the digital sales were well-represented across all retailers but Amazon and Apple stood out. Johnson said: "George R R Martin has just been flying out in recent months. We printed our millionth copy of the series and the book's success isn't just about the UK. It is number one in the Australian fiction chart. It's a great performance for us. It's obviously an incredible book and really exciting."
He said the other books in the series had a digital share of slightly less than 25% of physical sales. Johnson added that fantasy was one of the main genres, in addition to crime and romance, that had a higher proportion of digital sales. He highlighted the Avon crime title Cold Kill by Neil White and The Friday Project title Confessions of a GP by Benjamin Daniels as current digital standouts.
