HC "on course to exceed budget" for 2010

HarperCollins is "on course to exceed budget" by the end of the year, its c.e.o. and publisher Victoria Barnsley has revealed.

In a letter to staff, she said: "A note of good cheer to lift our spirits in this most snowbound of festive seasons, with a 13% week on week increase in sales, I’m delighted to say that we are still on course to exceed budget by the end of December."

Barnsley cited Russell Brand's Booky Wook 2 as the seventh bestselling celebrity biography this Christmas, and DJ Chris Evans' Memoirs of a Fruitcake as the eighth. She also hailed titles by pop stars Justin Bieber and JLS.

Scientist and TV presenter Brian Cox's Wonders of the Solar System was highlighted alongside The Man in the White Suit by Ben Collins a.k.a. The Stig, David Walliams' Billionaire Boy, Avon's Twelve Days of Christmas by Trisha Ashley and Jonathan Franzen's Freedom.

"This really is a terrific achievement as it's all been accomplished despite the snow and the on-going lack of consumer confidence," she said.

"All of you have really pulled together to make this happen in a fantastic team effort right across the company, but an especially big thank you is due to the amazing staff in the distribution centre who have heroically fought their way in (and out) of deep snow and treacherous ice to get the books out there and keep orders fulfilled."

Barnsley also urged HarperCollins staff to take part in World Book Night.
