HC acquires 50-challenge memoir

HarperCollins has acquired a "heartwarming and inspiring" family memoir written by Nigel Holland, who has a condition which causes wasting of the muscles in the lower part of the arms and legs, and who created a list of 50 activities to complete before turning 50.

HarperNon-Fiction commissioning editor Vicky McGeown bought world rights on a pre-empt from Juliet Mushens at PFD. The book, to be called The 50 List, will be published in March 2013.

Holland's youngest daughter Eleanor also has the condition, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, and the book will detail his experiences growing up with the condition, and the 50 challenges themselves, as a way to show his daughter that anything is possible.

McGeown said: "The 50 List is an immensely positive and uplifting memoir with a clear message about making the most of every moment and always living life to the full. Nigel began his challenge to inspire his young daughter, but I believe the message of his book is one that will inspire readers universally."
