Little, Brown has acquired “an extraordinary, haunting” novel as its lead fiction debut for 2015.
Publishing director Clare Smith bought UK and Commonwealth rights to Girl at War by Sara Nović from Alba Ziegler-Bailey at the Wylie Agency.
Girl at War is about Ana, a 10-year-old living a happy life in Zagreb, Croatia, in 1991 with her baby sister and her best friend Luka. War approaches, and a hurried journey to save her sister changes Ana’s life, leading her to escape to America.
Ten years later, as a college student, Ana’s suppressed memories are brought to the surface by the 9/11 attacks and an encounter at the UN Human Rights Council, leading Ana to return to Croatia in search of Luka.
Smith said: “I couldn’t be more delighted that Little, Brown is lucky enough to be publishing this extraordinary, haunting novel in the UK. Sara Nović’s effortlessly brilliant writing makes a powerfully raw story completely engrossing. Readers will connect with and care deeply about the characters.”
Little, Brown will publish Girl at War as its lead debut fiction title in 2015, with a global simultaneous publication date in May, alongside Random House US.
