Harvill Secker buys Daily Mirror's Sutton

Harvill Secker has bought a novel by Daily Mirror books editor Henry Sutton, which features a fictional crime writer, David Slavitt, at its centre.

Senior crime editor Alison Hennessey bought UK and Commonwealth rights (including Canada) to My Criminal World through David Miller at Rogers, Coleridge and White. Harvill Secker will publish in 2013.

The story focuses on struggling crime wrtier Slavitt, whose agent insists his new book needs more blood and guts. Interspersed with Slavitt's story are extracts from the crime story he is writing, which get more and more violent as the story progresses; the extracts will be published as a separate e-book.

Hennessey said: "Henry's new book was a joy to read, and I know crime fans will have as much fun as I did spotting the references to crime books and authors which he has cleverly buried within the story."

Sutton is currently the books editor of the Daily Mirror, and was previously the literary editor of Esquire magazine. He has written six novels, with his latest, Get Me Out of Here, published by Harvill Secker in 2010.
